Flat Tire

Last night, on the way from home – I was at a stop light and a fellow ran out to tell me my back tire was low. I waved thanks thinking it was just a little low and needed some air put in.

I got on the highway and the car’s tire pressure system turned on so I knew I needed to get to the tire place right away. Apparently I had to get to Anywhere right away.

I made it to the next exit, where there was an Exxon with a repair shop, and by then the tire was basically flat, which is why I was driving slowly but the irate people behind me didn’t get it, and even when I had my flashing hazard lights on.

The mechanic tried putting air in the tire but the tire wasn’t inflating and he could tell it was completely busted. He put the spare on the car and I drove it to the tire place near the house.

The tires we need are a slightly different size than what is currently on the car – so instead of just replacing the back tires, we are replacing all four so we have the same size all around.

They didn’t have the tires we want in stock, so they are having them sent over from another location, and tonight I will be getting 4 new tires.

Birthmas Present Number 2 (of 2)!

My friend Adrienne made my second Birthmas gift and I got It a few days week or so ago (see the first here).  .  She designed it and made each of the pieces . . . I’ve worn it a few times, and every time gotten lots of compliments.

I love having such artistic and awesomely awesome talented friends (and family) 😀

Rear Ended

I was on my way to the market with someone, it had been raining and the road was slick.  I had stopped at a red light and right be hind me I saw the car in my rear view mirror, and then I felt the bump.  The guy behind me was stopping but didn’t stop soon enough.  Luckily my car didn’t get damaged much, but the other guy might need a new hood.  Apparently this wasn’t the first time this has happened to him … I think he needs to invest in better tires.

Valentine’s Day (with a $5 Limit)

First of all, Happy Valentine’s Day!

Some years Gary and I exchange gifts, some years we don’t.  This year, we agreed on a $5 gift limit.

20120214-213501.jpgI picked up a storm trooper lego keychain from the lego store for $5 and some change with tax.  Gary likes R2D2, but he didnt have any arms.  Darth Vader was all black, and cute with the cape, but the stopr trooper has nice contrast.

I cut out a heart out of white printer paper for the storm trooper to hold and filled it in with a pink highlighter and wrote I (heart) U.  Then I made an origami box out of 8.5” x 11” printer paper.  Refresher directions HERE

On the top I drew a large heart in the middle, and smaller hearts surrounding.  I had some bubble wrap, so I cut out a square to put on the top of the box (because it’s bubble wrap, and who doesn’t like bubble wrap?).  On the sides of the box, I wrote in Korean Love, Kiss (english version), and Kiss (Korean Version).  I suppose I could have written ‘hug’, but I didn’t think of it at the time.  On the back I wrote the date in Korean.

We met at a Lebanese place for dinner, and exchanged our gifts.  I got a red long stemmed rose and a card, and inside the card was my gift.  He found a Korean poem, and wrote it in Korean and in English on one of my favourites; paper by Crane.  http://www.crane.com  Apparently it was hard finding the perfect poem with a good translation.

“Love makes me misunderstand you sometimes
considering you might feel that was just like I do.

Forgetting that you have lived with
different experiences that I reckons everything from my point of view.

However, the real love is that we accept the fact that we are different
from each other and narrow the gap between us.

In the end, we will find that we are alike in so many ways.”

It was SO sweet, and made me tear up, that he found such a sweet poem, and that he wrote it in Korean ^^  He’s so sweet, today and all year.

After dinner, we went to a frozen yogurt place a few doors down, then went home, and now we are watching Frasier on Netflix.

A lovely Valentine’s day.

It’s the thought that matters – not how much you spend on a gift

Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden
I started at the Robins Visitor Center to get my ticket.  The normal price to get in is $11, but this weekend it was $6.

I’m not sure if it was because of the season or for their Valentines Day special with Tea House Valentine’s menu, but the guy at the desk was very nice and gave me a map and a sheet of flowers to look for that were in bloom or to note.

I wanted to get a bite to eat for lunch, and there are two options . The ‘Tea House’ or the ‘Garden Cafe’. I wanted to check out the Tea Room which was only a few minutes walk from the entrance. When I got there, there were about 6 couples at tables, but no hostess and no servers. I waited for a few minutes, but since no one showed up I left.

I walked around the entire estate, except for the Conservatory and Library, and went back to the Robins Visitor Center to get a bite at the adjoining Garden Cafe. The prices were much better here, around $8 for a sandwich, where as the tea house meals were around $16. I had a grilled salmon sandwich that was quite good. I ate the pickle, but not the chips.

Afterwards, I went to check out the conservatory and the Library.

The conservatory was one reason I was drawn to this Botanical Garden. It is quite lovely and impressive from the outside.

The inside however was pretty, but surprisingly small. The main entrance had a tall glass ceiling and a pretty fountain adorned with plants. To the left was a cute cottage surrounded by flowers, such as pink cyclamen (in the picture).

To the right wing was a section of fountains and orchids. The back section was under construction -no plants yet.

Overall, I liked the garden, but feel I need to give it a second chance in the spring. There looked like covered walkways that would be covered in lovely flowers, a rose garden that would be lovely in bloom. There were sweet little bridges and streams that ran into ponds. The Snydor Lake, I’m sure is more picturesque with flowers in bloom around it.  It seems like a nice place for weddings.

I was a little disappointed in the overall size of the place, but I think it would have taken me longer had there been flowers to look at instead of bare branches, and had I not had to think about how my face and fingers were freezing.

Science Museum of Virginia
About 20-30 minutes away, I went to the Science Museum of Virginia.  It was a neat building that was originally an old train station.  The museum was more geared towards children, a lot of hands on displays.  I think it was a bit pricey for an $11 ticket but  I think it would have been better with kids.  I walked around for about an hour . . . I think I liked the building mostly -lol

Virginia Center for Architecture

After the science museum, I went to the Virginia Center for Architecture.  Partially because it was only a few minutes away, but also because I appreciate good architecture (The small museum section was interesting).  I loved the building, inside and out.  It was small-ish and quaint, and I loved its character.  The grassy garden area enclosed by a brick wall, the style of the house, the windows, the rooms.  So lovely.  I would love to live in that house.

Monuments

In a few steps walking distance, I saw the Jefferson Davis and Stonewall Jackson Statues.

Virginia Museum of the Fine Arts
About a 5 minute drive away, I went to the Virginia Museum of the Fine Arts.  Parking was $3, but it was Free to see the museum, unless you wanted to see their featured collection (Mummys) or their special exhibit (Photos of Elvis).  My feet were a bit tired from walking all day so I just did the free tour.

I really liked the hallways, corridors, and rooms.  It was a nice layout for exploring and showed off their statues in center areas really well.

I liked their Ancient section with Greek and Roman pieces, the statues, the coloured walls.

I want to go back when their new East Asian Collection opens up.  It will feature Chinese, Japanese, and Korean art.

The photo to the left was the outside section of the Cafe with the reflecting pool

Dinner
For dinner, I found a Korean restaurant and had bibimbap.  It was nice, but I still like my local fave Korean restaurant ^^

Overflow, Basketball, Broken

20120210-220211.jpgEvery morning, we use the restroom upstairs.  Every morning, I go downstairs to feed the pets and let them out.  Yesterday morning, I heard water gushing – and it was too loud to not be investigated.

Our downstairs toilet was overflowing!  I rushed to turn off the water nozzle at the base of the toilet.  Gary was already at work, so I called him to ask what should be done.  The suggestion to lift the plug in the tank in the back resulted in MORE water overflowing, so that didn’t work.  I turned the water off to the whole house.

I have a small wet/dry shop vac I use for picking up pet hair, so I took the dry filter off and started sucking up water with it.  Love that thing.  This is the one I have for the house HERE.  Anyway, to keep it short, we had to have a sewer guy come out and snake the pipes outside.  Then we had to have the City come out and they were able to snake what the sewer guy couldn’t.

In the evening we went to an nc state woman’s basketball game  with my parents.  When we got home, 20120210-220312.jpgapparently one of our cats (I think the one that likes my purses) had knocked over my make-up bag that was on the bathroom counter.  I opened up the compact this morning, and the mirror had broken -__-

I bought two replacements today.
